Multivariate analysis of molecular markers in peripheral blood associated with recurrence and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma

Invasion, metastasis, and recurrence are the most common causes of death in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and are therefore critical factors for both therapy and prognosis. Current methods for diagnosis of HCC rely mainly on serological markers such as alpha-fetoprotein and liver enzymes, together with physical assessment and imaging techniques. The availability of more accurate serum markers may facilitate screening and early diagnosis, which will improve prognosis.

Serum level of endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 and prognosis of colorectal cancer

H. Jiang, Fu, X. G., and Chen, Y. T., Serum level of endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 and prognosis of colorectal cancer, vol. 14, pp. 5519-5526, 2015.

We evaluated the clinical significance and explored the prognostic value of serum endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 (ESM-1) expression in colorectal cancer (CRC) in a Chinese population. Serum samples were obtained from 89 CRC patients undergoing surgical treatment and 90 healthy volunteers (control group). ESM-1 levels in serum samples from CRC patients and controls were measured using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Overall survival was analyzed by the log-rank test, and survival curves were plotted according to the Kaplan-Meier method.

Rapid identification of red-flesh loquat cultivars using EST-SSR markers based on manual cultivar identification diagram strategy

X. Y. Li, Xu, H. X., and Chen, J. W., Rapid identification of red-flesh loquat cultivars using EST-SSR markers based on manual cultivar identification diagram strategy, vol. 13, pp. 3384-3394, 2014.

Manual cultivar identification diagram is a new strategy for plant cultivar identification based on DNA markers, providing information to efficiently separate cultivars. We tested 25 pairs of apple EST-SSR primers for amplification of PCR products from loquat cultivars. These EST-SSR primers provided clear amplification products from the loquat cultivars, with a relatively high transferability rate of 84% to loquat; 11 pairs of primers amplified polymorphic products.

Inter- and intra-specific genetic diversity of Iranian yarrow species Achillea santolina and Achillea tenuifolia based on ISSR and RAPD markers

M. Ebrahimi, Farajpour, M., and Rahimmalek, M., Inter- and intra-specific genetic diversity of Iranian yarrow species Achillea santolina and Achillea tenuifolia based on ISSR and RAPD markers, vol. 11, pp. 2855-2861, 2012.

Cultivation and preservation of yarrow has recently attracted wide attention due to its beneficial properties; however, genetic variation of Achillea species is still relatively unknown. We used RAPD and ISSR markers to assess genetic diversity in 16 accessions of yarrow belonging to two species native to Iran. Seven ISSR and nine RAPD primers generated 187 amplified fragments, of which 159 were polymorphic. The similarity coefficient among Achillea tenuifolia accessions ranged from 61 to 86%, and from 40 to 84% among A. santolina accessions.
