Abstract

The incorporation of yoga into mainstream sports training has become a topic of interest, as it is a multi-dimensional approach to enhancing sports performance, psychological state, and recovery. This review synthesizes current evidence on the physiological, functional, psychological, and sport-specific relevance of yoga within athletic training. The literature reviewed suggests that yoga has the potential to be used in conjunction with existing conditioning, with demonstrated benefits for flexibility, balance, joint stability, functional movement, respiratory control, autonomic regulation, attention, emotional regulation and perceived recovery. Further evidence indicates potential benefits for competitive anxiety, mental resilience, confidence, concentration, burnout recovery, and performance consistency, especially when the yoga-based practices are combined, rather than used alone. Further research findings in the sport of cricket, handball, basketball, tennis, golf, archery and baseball support contextualized programming based on technical and physical demands. Despite these benefits, there is limited evidence base due to the lack of consistent protocols, small sample sizes, brief duration of interventions, and varying outcome measures. Standardized interventions, dose-response, longitudinal designs, objective biomarkers and direct competition-based outcomes should be prioritized in future research. In conclusion, yoga seems to offer the most benefit when used as a part of a sports training program as a complementary, individualized, and periodized training method and not as a replacement for traditional sports training.
