Medical laboratory services are an essential component of modern healthcare, providing important information for disease diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and prevention. Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) play a vital role in the laboratory testing process, including specimen handling, laboratory analysis, quality control, result verification and maintenance of laboratory safety. With the rapid development of automation, molecular diagnostics, point-of-care testing, laboratory information systems and artificial intelligence, the responsibilities of MLTs are continuously evolving. This review discusses the changing role of Medical Laboratory Technologists in modern healthcare, with particular emphasis on diagnostic services, quality assurance, patient safety, technological advancement and professional development. It also highlights major challenges faced by laboratory professionals, including technological changes, skill gaps, workload and the need for continuous professional education. The review emphasizes that modern laboratory professionals require not only technical laboratory skills but also knowledge of digital technologies, quality management, data interpretation and multidisciplinary healthcare practice. Strengthening professional education and continuing competency development will be essential for preparing Medical Laboratory Technologists to meet the future demands of healthcare.
