CHANGING SOCIAL DYNAMICS IN URBAN INDIA: A STUDY OF MIGRATION AND CULTURAL INTEGRATION

Abstract

Urbanization in India has accelerated through sustained internal migration, reshaping demographic distribution and social relations across urban spaces while generating uneven regional outcomes. Existing research has emphasized migration and urban growth separately, leaving limited integration of structural urban patterns with cultural transformation. This study examines how migration influences social dynamics and cultural integration within urban India through a mixed method, descriptive-analytical design. Secondary data from Census 2011, PLFS, NSSO, and administrative population datasets are combined with thematic analysis of scholarly literature to evaluate urban structure, migration patterns, and integration indicators such as language adaptation, occupational mobility, and social interaction. Findings indicate that India remains predominantly rural with an urban share of approximately 31.2%, alongside strong regional disparities where highly urbanized regions such as Delhi and Chandigarh contrast sharply with low-urbanization states like Bihar and Assam. Urban density differentials and concentration of towns suggest sustained rural-to-urban migration pressures and uneven absorption capacity across regions. Evidence points toward increasing heterogeneity and hybrid cultural forms in urban areas, accompanied by structural inequalities affecting integration. The study highlights the need for inclusive urban governance frameworks addressing migrant vulnerabilities and regional imbalances. Urbanization emerges as a multidimensional process where migration acts as a central force shaping demographic concentration, social restructuring, and evolving cultural landscapes in contemporary India.
