PEDIATRIC ENDOCRINE DISORDERS: NARRATIVE REVIEW OF AYURVEDIC PRINCIPLES AND CONTEMPORARY ENDOCRINOLOGY

Abstract

Pediatric endocrine disorders represent a significant global health burden affecting children's growth, development, and quality of life. While contemporary endocrinology has achieved remarkable advances in diagnosis and treatment, there remains growing interest in integrating traditional medical systems, particularly Ayurveda, to provide holistic, personalized care. This integrative review synthesizes current evidence examining the convergence of Ayurvedic principles with modern pediatric endocrinology. A comprehensive systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Google Scholar, Ayurvedic medical databases, and classical Ayurvedic texts. Studies published between 2000-2025 were included if they addressed pediatric endocrine disorders from either contemporary medical, Ayurvedic, or integrative perspectives. Data were extracted and synthesized using thematic analysis. Thirty high-quality studies were identified examining thyroid disorders, growth disturbances, pubertal abnormalities, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. Ayurvedic concepts of Dosha imbalance, Dhatu dysfunction, and Agni vitiation demonstrate conceptual parallels with modern endocrine pathophysiology. Clinical evidence supports integrative approaches showing improved outcomes in hypothyroidism, short stature, and metabolic disorders when Ayurvedic protocols are combined with standard care. Integration of Ayurvedic principles with contemporary pediatric endocrinology offers promising synergistic benefits. Rigorous clinical trials are needed to establish standardized protocols, dosage optimization, and long-term safety profiles for pediatric populations. This integrative paradigm aligns with precision medicine trends while honoring traditional healing wisdom.
