Abstract

Agriculture has in recent times formed the main base of all food products. Agriculture is the practice of growing different crops such as pulses necessary to supply the food sources rich in proteins and improve the soil health by fixing active nitrogen into the soil. Mungbean (MB) (Vigna radiata L.) is a significant pulse crop with great contribution to human food and soil liveliness. In addition, MBs contain large amounts of nutrients and antioxidants which are having health benefits. The growth cycle of MBs that takes relatively long to enable the following cropping cycle poses some problems with its production in Rice-Wheat Cropping Systems (RWCS). By causing mutations in MBs that occur at an early stage of maturity, these mutations can result in the RWCSs being far more efficient, allowing crops to grow through their succession faster and enhancing the soil health by repairing the nitrogen. Therefore, this review paper aims to consider how to genetically enhance MB in order to grow fast by inducing mutations that have been proven to be effective in RWCSs. Correspondingly, this paper explores the importance of early maturing MB in rice-wheat (RW) systems, analyzes different physical and chemical mutagens in the production of early-maturing MB varieties, ascertains the LD50, and identifies the desired MB mutants that have a short maturity, high yield, and synchronous maturity.
