Abstract

Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (winged bean) is an underutilized tropical leguminous crop of exceptional nutritional value and growing pharmaceutical interest. Its seeds, pods, leaves and tubers are rich sources of proteins, essential amino acids, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and diverse bioactive phytochemicals, including phenolics, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, lectins, bioactive peptides and phytosterols. These phytoconstituents exhibit a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, cardioprotective and potential anticancer effects through mechanisms such as free radical scavenging, modulation of inflammatory pathways and inhibition of carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes. Recent advances in phytochemical characterization, extraction technologies and genomic resources have further highlighted the potential of winged bean for the development of nutraceuticals, functional foods, pharmaceutical formulations and novel drug delivery systems. Despite encouraging preclinical evidence, its clinical translation remains limited owing to insufficient toxicological and pharmacokinetic data and the lack of well-designed human clinical studies. This review comprehensively summarizes the phytochemical composition, pharmacological activities and pharmaceutical potential of P. tetragonolobus, while discussing current challenges and future research directions. Overall, winged bean represents a nutritionally valuable and pharmacologically promising legume with considerable potential for future nutraceutical and pharmaceutical development, warranting further clinical validation and translational research.
