The prime objective of conventional periodontal therapeutic modality is the elimination of mineralised deposits from the radicular teeth aspects by rendering it disease-free, in alignment with enhanced periodontal health. Precise detection of mineralised deposits from the radicular teeth surfaces apical to the gingival margin and adequate eradication of the biofilm along with entire mineralised calculus is the basis for overall oral health improvement of a person. These modified techniques works on the principle of identification only or its combination with elimination procedure. It helps in accurate detection as well as meticulous elimination; and should always augment traditional methods without replacing conventional detection or removal techniques in periodontal therapy. This review compiles the different advanced techniques along with their effectiveness for identification and eradication of calculus.
