Abstract

The study examined the economics of mango cultivation and growth trends in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh. Three major mango-growing blocks—Masturi, Belha, and Takhatpur—were selected, and primary data were collected from 150 farmers across 15 villages. Secondary data on area, production, and productivity for the period 2007–08 to 2016–17 were analyzed using CACP cost concepts, Compound Growth Rate (CGR), and statistical tools. The results revealed an average mango yield of 100.01 quintals per hectare and a production cost of ₹780.55 per quintal. Large farms achieved higher gross returns due to better productivity and production efficiency, whereas small farms incurred higher production costs because of lower yields. The input–output ratio of 1:2.60 confirmed that mango cultivation is a profitable enterprise. Growth analysis showed significant increases in area (5.75%) and production (5.52%), while productivity declined slightly (-0.24%). The study concludes that sustainable growth in mango cultivation requires improved orchard management, adoption of improved varieties, balanced input use, post-harvest management, nearby processing facilities, farmer training, and stronger government support.
