Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea refers to pain during menstruation in the absence of a pelvic disorder and can impact daily activities and quality of life.  As an approach to pain and symptom management, exercise-based care seems to be beneficial because of its low cost, ease of access, and potential for functional recovery. Despite the fact that primary dysmenorrhea can improve with 8 to 12 weeks of progressive Pilates, the remaining literature is inconclusive. The lack of rigor in the trials is evident due to poor blinding methods, lack of standard outcome measures, and incomplete follow-up. This paper aims to contribute to the body of knowledge regarding the impact of Pilates exercise on the level of pain experienced and functional limitations among women with primary dysmenorrhea. We used a PICO framework, the PRISMA 2020 flow diagram for systematic reviews, and PEDro-style evidence appraisal. According to the current literature, functional limitations and pain level can be positively impacted with progressive Pilates. Health-related quality of life and sleep quality can also be improved with a progressive Pilates regimen.
