Abstract

The change in global climate pattern with increase in global population which is estimated to extend 2 billion in 2028, are putting pressure on the agriculture production with several constraints due to change in land use pattern, declining soil fertility, biodiversity loss, reduced ground water which reduces crop yield affecting global food supply. These challenges could be overcome by adopting advanced technologies coupled with sustainable solutions that are innovative. Therefore farmer’s decision making capabilities can improved by using predictive models that involve digital and data driven technologies by enhancing efficiency with growing output with minimum input resources. This review explores the capabilities of algorithms of artificial intelligence used to accelerate genomic selection, unlock genetic diversity, allow precise gene editing, and predict effects of variants at gene level on plant phenotype development. Therefore enhance the efficiency of crop improvement program by accelerating the creation and production of smart resilient and sustainable cultivars to the projected future environments.
