MARKET PRICE DYNAMICS OF GINGER (Zingiber officinale): A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PUBLIC MARKETS IN NORTHERN SAMAR, PHILIPPINES

Abstract

This study presented the comparative market price analysis of ginger across the municipalities of Bobon, Catarman, San Roque, and Las Navas Northern Samar, Philippines. The essential information were obtained directly from 73 respondents through structured questioners followed by  a personal interview. This study documented the socio - demographic profile of the ginger retailer in the public market, determined and compared the prices of ginger in terms of supply, demand, seasonality, marketing, and identified the problems encountered by the retailers in the public market of four (4) identified municipalities. A qualitative research method was employed, utilizing survey questioners as main tool used to gather the necessary data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical method such frequency counts. The findings revealed that the municipality of Catarman showed the highest volume of sales per kilo and per piece followed by San Roque with more price variation while Bobon and Las Navas fewer sales. The municipality of San Roque recorded the lowest average price as stocks aged and sales decreased, prompting customers to turn to alternative retailers. The data reflected the price differences influenced by supply, demand, transportation, and local markets condition. The study recommended that improve market access and strengthen market information systems to deliver timely and to record accurate data on ginger prices, demand patterns, and seasonal supply trends, enabling retailers to make informed decisions on pricing and procurement strategies. Encouraging price transparency and strengthening local market systems can help ensure fairer trade practices and provide more reliable access to high-quality ginger at affordable prices.
