Abstract

Inhalation injury is a serious complication that frequently accompanies burn injuries and can significantly increase patient morbidity and mortality. Identifying the characteristics of burn patients who experience inhalation injury is essential to support prevention efforts and improve management strategies. This study is a descriptive retrospective design utilizing secondary data from the medical records of burn patients at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, during the period of 2020–2023. A total of 86 patients who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. The majority of patients were male (73.3%; 63 patients), and most were in the adult age group (19–59 years; 77.9%; 67 patients). The most common total body surface area (TBSA) burned was within the 31–40% range (20.9%; 18 patients). The primary cause of burn injuries was fire (93.0%; 80 patients). Most patients were hospitalized for 2–10 days (47.7%; 41 patients). Adult males who sustained burns from fire were the most at risk of developing inhalation injuries. Educational initiatives and fire prevention strategies targeting high-risk populations are crucial in reducing the incidence of inhalation injuries and improving patient outcomes.
