Promoters of genes encoding superoxide dismutase (sodA) and peptide methionine sulfoxide reductase (msrA) from Cory­nebacterium glutamicum were cloned and sequenced. Promoter region analysis of sodA-msrA was unable to identify putative sites of fixed eventual regulators except for possible sites of fixed OxyR and integra­tion host factor. A study of the regulation of these genes was performed using the lacZ gene of Escherichia coli as a reporter placed under the control of sequences downstream of sodA and msrA.

The aim of this study was to determine the protective effects of the combination of ascorbic acid (Vc) and vitamin E (VE) on antioxidant enzyme activity, sperm motility, viability, and acrosome integrity of Qinchuan bulls after freeze-thaw. In this study, we determined the effects of Vc and VE on the activity of the antioxidant enzyme defense system comprising glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The combination of Vc and VE had protective effects on sperm motility and viability.

Effects of the ginkgo biloba extract on the superoxide dismutase activity and apoptosis of endothelial progenitor cells from diabetic peripheral blood

Although ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) was shown to have antioxidant effects, little has been reported on the ability to GBE to help endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) resist oxidative stress. The present study evaluated the influence of different concentrations of GBE on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and apoptosis of diabetic peripheral blood EPCs. Twenty-five diabetic patients without any vascular complications were included in the experimental group, while 15 healthy adults made up the control group.

The current study was designed to evaluate lipid peroxidation (via malondialdehyde) levels, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) gene expression profile, and SOD enzyme activity in tomato plants (Lycopersicum esculentum L.) subjected to different time periods of cold stress (control, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 days). Results revealed that maximum lipid peroxidation occurred in plants exposed to cold stress for 10 days, and SOD enzyme activity gradually increased with increasing exposure to cold stress.

Oxidative stress may be contributory to the pathophy­siology of the abnormalities that underlie the clinical course of sickle cell anemia. We looked for a possible genetic association between the functional polymorphism Ala-9Val in the human Mn-SOD gene and sickle cell anemia. One hundred and twenty-seven patients with sickle cell anemia and 127 healthy controls were recruited into the study.
