Identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 gene (STAT3) associated with body measurement and carcass quality traits in beef cattle

Previous studies have shown that the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 gene (STAT3) is involved in lipid storage and energy metabolism, suggesting that STAT3 is a potential candidate gene that affects body measurement and carcass quality traits in animals. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify polymorphisms in bovine STAT3 and to analyze their possible associations with body measurement and carcass quality traits in 493 individuals of 2 native Chinese cattle breeds: Qinchuan (N = 371) and Jiaxian cattle (N = 122).

Lack of association between TYK2 and STAT3 genes and Crohn’s disease in the Malaysian population

L. H. Lian, Lau, T. P., Lee, V. L., Lee, W. S., Hilmi, I., Goh, K. L., and Chua, K. H., Lack of association between TYK2 and STAT3 genes and Crohn’s disease in the Malaysian population, vol. 12, pp. 167-174, 2013.

This study aimed to investigate the potential association of TYK2 and STAT3 genes with the susceptibility to Crohn’s disease (CD) among Malaysians. DNA samples were obtained from 80 CD patients and 100 healthy controls. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methods were employed for genotyping, followed by statistical analysis. In our current study, none of the single nucleotide polymorphisms of either TYK2 or STAT3 was statistically associated with the susceptibility to CD in our local population (P > 0.05).

STAT3 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to non-small cell lung cancer

B. Jiang, Zhu, Z. Z., Liu, F., Yang, L. J., Zhang, W. Y., Yuan, H. H., Wang, J. G., Hu, X. H., and Huang, G., STAT3 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to non-small cell lung cancer, vol. 10, pp. 1856-1865, 2011.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription protein 3 (STAT3) has been implicated in cancer development and is recognized as a type of oncogene. However, association studies of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the STAT3 gene with cancer risk are rare and not available for lung cancer. We examined whether STAT3 polymorphisms are associated with the risk of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Eight SNPs in the STAT3 gene were genotyped by TaqMan assays in 326 NSCLC cases and 432 controls in a Chinese population.
