Study of the relationship between the expression of nerve growth factor and aneurysm formation and prognosis

C. D. Wang, Wang, D. K., Cao, P. C., Wang, Z. W., Wang, Z., and Wang, Y. T., Study of the relationship between the expression of nerve growth factor and aneurysm formation and prognosis, vol. 14, pp. 4269-4275, 2015.

We sought to investigate the effect of nerve growth factor (NGF) expression on the formation and prognosis of cerebral aneurysms. Forty-eight cases were selected following a diagnosis of cerebral aneurysm using computed tomography angiography and surgical confirmation. Thirty-four cases of healthy deaths were also chosen. The tissue was tested for NGF expression changes by reverse-transcription PCR, Western blot and histopathology, and NGF expression was compared between the cerebral aneurysm and healthy groups.

Efficient oil palm total RNA extraction with a total RNA extraction kit

S. H. Habib, Saud, H. M., and Kausar, H., Efficient oil palm total RNA extraction with a total RNA extraction kit, vol. 13, pp. 2359-2367, 2014.

Oil palm tissues are rich in polyphenols, polysaccharides and secondary metabolites; these can co-precipitate with RNA, causing problems for downstream applications. We compared two different methods (one conventional and a kit-based method - Easy-BlueTM Total RNA Extraction Kit) to isolate total RNA from leaves, roots and shoot apical meristems of tissue culture derived truncated leaf syndrome somaclonal oil palm seedlings. The quality and quantity of total RNA were compared through spectrophotometry and formaldehyde gel electrophoresis.

N-terminal functional region of the invariant chain efficiently targets the binding of a CTL epitope to MHC class I molecules during cross-presentation

C. Wu, Zhang, D. G., Chen, F. F., Liu, X. L., Liu, S. J., and Yu, W. Y., N-terminal functional region of the invariant chain efficiently targets the binding of a CTL epitope to MHC class I molecules during cross-presentation, vol. 13, pp. 2438-2450, 2014.

Cross-presentation (CP) is important for priming T cell responses to many viral, bacterial, and tumor antigens. Here, we designed two Ii mutants, based on evidence that the invariant chain (Ii, also named CD74) binds newly synthesized MHC class I molecules with the class II-associated invariant chain peptide (CLIP) region of Ii, which occupies the peptide-binding groove.

Boric acid increases the expression levels of human anion exchanger genes SLC4A2 and SLC4A3

F. Akbas and Aydin, Z., Boric acid increases the expression levels of human anion exchanger genes SLC4A2 and SLC4A3, vol. 11, pp. 847-854, 2012.

Boron is an important micronutrient in plants and animals. The role of boron in living systems includes coordinated regulation of gene expression, growth and proliferation of higher plants and animals. There are several well-defined genes associated with boron transportation and tolerance in plants and these genes show close homology with human anion exchanger genes. Mutation of these genes also characterizes some genetic disorders.

Downregulation of hsp22 gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster from sites located near chemical plants

L. M. Magdalena, Coipan, E. C., Vladimirescu, A. F., Savu, L., Costache, M., and Gavrila, L., Downregulation of hsp22 gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster from sites located near chemical plants, vol. 11, pp. 739-745, 2012.

A common physiological response of organisms to environmental conditions is variation in gene expression, especially true for genes encoding for heat shock proteins. In insects, this process has been examined for induced heat or cold stress. The putative long-term imprinted/acquired heat shock protein response due to unfriendly environmental conditions has been far less studied. The Drosophila melanogaster hsp22 gene, which has been extensively reviewed as being sensitive to different changing life conditions, was examined by qRT-PCR, using carboxy-X-rhodamine.

Piperine inhibits cytokine production by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells

S. Chuchawankul, Khorana, N., and Poovorawan, Y., Piperine inhibits cytokine production by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, vol. 11, pp. 617-627, 2012.

Piperine, an amide isolated from Piper species (Piperaceae), has been reported to exhibit central nervous system depression, anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory activity. Immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activity of piperine has been demonstrated in mouse carcinomas. However, there is little information available concerning the effect of piperine on humans. We evaluated the immunopharmacological activity of this compound in human immune cells. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were exposed to piperine, and cell proliferation was determined by the MTS assay.

Efficient isolation of high-quality RNA from lotus Nelumbo nucifera ssp nucifera tissues

Y. J. Zhang, Hao, X. Y., Liang, Z. S., Ke, W. D., and Guo, H. B., Efficient isolation of high-quality RNA from lotus Nelumbo nucifera ssp nucifera tissues, vol. 12. pp. 223-229, 2013.

Nelumbo nucifera is widely used as food, as an ornamental, in medicine, and as packing material; it is also reported to have anti-HIV effects and antioxidant capacity. We sought an improved method for extracting high-quality total RNA from different tissues of N. nucifera. Four methods for RNA extraction were assessed for their ability to recover high-quality RNA applicable for evaluation of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) gene expression profiles.

D. F. Barione, Lizarte, F. S. N., Novais, P. C., de Carvalho, C. A. M., Valeri, F. C. B., Peria, F. M., de Oliveira, H. F., Zanette, D. L., Silva, Jr., W. A., Cologna, A. J., Reis, R. B., Tucci, Jr., S., Martins, A. C. P., Tirapelli, D. P. C., and Tirapelli, L. F., Gene expression study related with the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis in bladder cancer by real-time PCR technique, vol. 12, pp. 878-886, 2013.

We examined the expression of anti-apoptotic genes (XIAP and Bcl-2) and apoptotic genes (cytochrome c, caspase-9, Apaf-1) in tissue samples of patients with superficial bladder cancer. Thirty-two bladder cancer tissue samples (8 papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential, 10 low-grade, and 14 high-grade) and 8 normal bladder tissue samples from necropsy were used for the study of gene expression by real-time PCR analysis.

Gene expression patterns of invertase gene families and modulation of the inhibitor gene in tomato sucrose metabolism

Y. L. Zhang, Zhang, A. H., and Jiang, J., Gene expression patterns of invertase gene families and modulation of the inhibitor gene in tomato sucrose metabolism, vol. 12, pp. 3412-3420, 2013.

Patterns of gene expression in the different types of sucrose metabolism in the tomato are highly variable and heritable. This genetic variation causes considerable functional differences. We examined the patterns of expression of invertase (Inv) gene families and an invertase inhibitor (INH) gene involved in elongating roots, hypocotyls, and fruit of the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Micro-Tom and L. chmielewskii) through a real-time quantitative PCR analysis.

Gene expression of coffee seed oxidation and germination processes during drying

G. C. Santos, Von Pinho, E. V. R., and Rosa, S. D. V. F., Gene expression of coffee seed oxidation and germination processes during drying, vol. 12, pp. 6968-6982, 2013.

Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) seeds are sensitive to desiccation and oxidative stress during drying processes. We investigated the effect of drying and moisture levels on germination-related gene expressions associated with enzymatic systems that prevent oxidative stress in coffee seeds. Coffee seeds collected at physiological maturity were subjected to slow and quick drying to 40, 30, 20, and 12% moisture levels (wet basis), and as the control, seeds without drying were used.
