H. S. Zhu, Zhang, J. F., Zhou, J. D., Zhang, M. J., and Hu, H. X., Association between the 8q24 rs6983267 T/G polymorphism and prostate cancer risk: a meta-analysis, vol. 14, pp. 19329-19341, 2015.

Recent studies have indicated that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the 8q24 region may be a risk factor for prostate cancer (PCa). Here, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between the 8q24 rs6983267 T/G polymorphism and PCa risk. A systematic literature search was carried out in multiple electronic databases independently by two investigators. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals for 8q24 rs6983267 T/G and PCa were calculated using a fixed-effect model (the Mantel-Haenszel method).

Z. T. Wang, Wang, L. Y., Wang, L., Cheng, S., Fan, R., Zhou, J., and Zhong, J., Association between RAGE gene polymorphisms and ulcerative colitis susceptibility: a case-control study in a Chinese Han population, vol. 14, pp. 19242-19248, 2015.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an immune-related disease with genetic predisposition. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of three polymorphisms in the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) gene with UC risk in a Chinese population. This case-control study involved 72 UC patients and 479 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Genotyping was performed using the polymerase chain reaction-ligase detection reaction method. Data were analyzed using the Haplo.stats program.

Association between polymorphisms in insulin-like growth factor-1 and risk of osteoporosis

W. Zhang, Zhang, L. C., Chen, H., Tang, P. F., and Zhang, L. H., Association between polymorphisms in insulin-like growth factor-1 and risk of osteoporosis, vol. 14, pp. 7655-7660, 2015.

We conducted a case-control study to assess the relationship between rs35767, rs2288377, and rs5742612 insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and osteoporosis risk in a Chinese female population. The genotypes of rs35767, rs2288377, and rs5742612 of IGF-1 were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Patients with osteoporosis were more likely to have drinking and smoking habits and have lower bone mineral density in the L2-L4 vertebrae, femoral neck, and total hip.

Predictive value of vascular endothelial growth factor polymorphisms on the risk of renal cell carcinomas

W. Xian, Zheng, H., and Wu, W. J., Predictive value of vascular endothelial growth factor polymorphisms on the risk of renal cell carcinomas, vol. 14, pp. 7634-7642, 2015.

We conducted a case-control study in a Chinese population to assess whether 5 common single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the vascular endothelial growth factor gene (VEGF) affect the risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The study population included 266 RCC patients who were newly diagnosed and histologically confirmed to have RCC as well as 532 cancer-free controls. Genotyping of VEGF -2578C/A, -1156G/A, +1612G/A, +936C/T, and -634G/C was conducted by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.

Association between the hsa-miR-146a rs2910164 functional polymorphism with susceptibility to intracranial aneurysm

X. T. Sima, Xu, J. G., Li, J., and You, C., Association between the hsa-miR-146a rs2910164 functional polymorphism with susceptibility to intracranial aneurysm, vol. 14, pp. 7680-7686, 2015.

Vascular inflammation has been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of intracranial aneurysms (IA). MiRNAs are key molecules that participate in the regulation of many important biological processes including inflammation. Studies on the hsa-miR-146a rs2910164 polymorphism and its association with different inflammatory related diseases have engendered inconsistent results, and until now, there have been no reports on the association between this polymorphism and the susceptibility to IA.

Transferability of microsatellite markers of Capsicum annuum L. to C. frutescens L. and C. chinense Jacq.

S. I. C. Carvalho, Ragassi, C. F., Oliveira, I. B., Amaral, Z. P. S., Reifschneider, F. J. B., Faleiro, F. G., and Buso, G. S. C., Transferability of microsatellite markers of Capsicum annuum L. to C. frutescens L. and C. chinense Jacq., vol. 14, pp. 7937-7946, 2015.

In order to support further genetic, diversity, and phylogeny studies of Capsicum species, the transferability of a Capsicum annuum L. simple sequence repeat (SSR) microsatellite set was analyzed for C. frutescens L. (“malagueta” and “tabasco” peppers) and C. chinense Jacq. (smell peppers, among other types). A total of 185 SSR primers were evaluated in 12 accessions from 115 C. frutescens L. and 480 C. chinense Jacq, representing different types within each species. Transferability to C.

Associations between tumor necrosis factor-α polymorphisms and susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis: meta-analysis

The aim of this study was to determine whether tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in different ethnic populations. MEDLINE and Embase databases and manual searches were employed to identify articles in which TNF-α polymorphisms were determined in patients with PTB and controls. A meta-analysis was conducted on the associations of the TNF-α -308A/G, -238A/G, and -857T/C polymorphisms with PTB susceptibility.

Association between five common polymorphisms in microRNA genes and the risk of gastric cancer: a meta-analysis

Y. P. Gu, Yuan, Q. Y., Zhang, H., Wang, C. J., and Zhou, F., Association between five common polymorphisms in microRNA genes and the risk of gastric cancer: a meta-analysis, vol. 14, pp. 8375-8387, 2015.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a prevalent disease with a high mortality rate, especially in developing countries. Accumulating evidence suggests that single nucleotide polymorphisms in microRNA (miRNA) genes might influence the susceptibility to GC; such sequence variation might contribute to the development of disease by altering crucial cellular pathways. In this study, we assessed the correlation between the miR-146a G>C, miR-196a-2 C>T, miR-499 T>C, miRNA-27a A>G, and miRNA-149 T>C polymorphisms and the susceptibility to GC.

-173G/C polymorphism in the promoter of MIF is associated with hepatitis B virus infection in a Chinese Han population

Z. S. Wang, Yin, C. C., Han, S., Jiang, F. L., Guo, W. G., Wu, L. Q., and Liu, S. H., -173G/C polymorphism in the promoter of MIF is associated with hepatitis B virus infection in a Chinese Han population, vol. 14, pp. 8532-8538, 2015.

In addition to the host immune response, genetic and environmental factors play crucial roles in the manifestation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) -173G/C polymorphism (rs755622), located in the promoter region of MIF, may play integral roles in diverse processes, including the immune response. Thus, the MIF -173G/C polymorphism may influence the immune response to HBV during natural infection.
