S., Genetic progress resulting from forty-three years of breeding of the carioca common bean in Brazil, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

We aimed to evaluate 40 common bean cultivars recommended by various Brazilian research institutions between 1970 and 2013 and estimate the genetic progress obtained for grain yield and other agronomic traits. Additionally, we proposed a bi-segmented nonlinear regression model to infer the year in which breeding began to show significant gains in Brazil. The experiment was carried out in Viçosa/MG and Coimbra/MG, in the dry and winter seasons of 2013. For this, a randomized complete block design with three replications was employed.

E., Selection of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes using a genotype plus genotype x environment interaction biplot, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

Recently, the genotype plus genotype x environment interaction (GGE) biplot methodology has been used to investigate genotype x environment interactions in several crop species, but has not been applied to the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crop in Brazil. The aim of this study was to identify common bean genotypes that exhibit high grain yield and stability in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

S., and Cruz, C. D., Diallel analysis to choose parents for black bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) breeding, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

In this study, conducted in two different seasons, we aimed to choose parents to obtain promising segregating populations for the extraction of black bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines that are superior in terms of disease resistance, plant architecture, and grain yield. Twelve parents were arranged in two groups to compose a partial diallel in a 5 x 7 scheme.

Genetic potential of common bean progenies obtained by different breeding methods evaluated in various environments

V. A. Pontes Júnior, Melo, P. G. S., Pereira, H. S., Melo, L. C., Júnior, V. A. Pontes, Melo, P. G. S., Pereira, H. S., and Melo, L. C., Genetic potential of common bean progenies obtained by different breeding methods evaluated in various environments, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

Grain yield is strongly influenced by the environment, has polygenic and complex inheritance, and is a key trait in the selection and recommendation of cultivars. Breeding programs should efficiently explore the genetic variability resulting from crosses by selecting the most appropriate method for breeding in segregating populations. The goal of this study was to evaluate and compare the genetic potential of common bean progenies of carioca grain for grain yield, obtained by different breeding methods and evaluated in different environments.

A., Nascimento, M., Santos, A., and Torres, F. E., Artificial intelligence in the selection of common bean genotypes with high phenotypic stability, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

Artificial neural networks have been used for various purposes in plant breeding, including use in the investigation of genotype x environment interactions. The aim of this study was to use artificial neural networks in the selection of common bean genotypes with high phenotypic adaptability and stability, and to verify their consistency with the Eberhart and Russell method. Six trials were conducted using 13 genotypes of common bean between 2002 and 2006 in the municipalities of Aquidauana and Dourados. The experimental design was a randomized block with three replicates.

Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines: chemical composition and protein digestibility

F. R. Mesquita, Silva, M. I. A., Corrêa, A. D., Mesquita, F. R., Silva, M. I. A., and Corrêa, A. D., Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines: chemical composition and protein digestibility, vol. 15. p. -, 2016.

The bean represents the main source of proteins for the low income populations, although the digestibility of those proteins is relatively low. Consequently, the programs of plant genetic breeding have been working on the search for new lines with higher protein levels. Thus, with the purpose of supplying information to the researchers, in this study, 21 bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines were analyzed for the centesimal and mineral composition, protein digestibility, phenolic compounds, and trypsin inhibitor.

Implications of mitotic and meiotic irregularities in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

D. C. Lima, Braz, G. T., Reis, G. Bdos, Techio, V. H., Davide, L. C., A. Abreu, deF. B., Lima, D. C., Braz, G. T., Reis, G. Bdos, Techio, V. H., Davide, L. C., and A. Abreu, deF. B., Implications of mitotic and meiotic irregularities in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

The common bean has great social and economic importance in Brazil and is the subject of a high number of publications, especially in the fields of genetics and breeding. Breeding programs aim to increase grain yield; however, mitosis and meiosis represent under explored research areas that have a direct impact on grain yield. Therefore, the study of cell division could be another tool available to bean geneticists and breeders. The aim of this study was to investigate irregularities occurring during the cell cycle and meiosis in common bean.

E., Adaptability and phenotypic stability of common bean genotypes through Bayesian inference, vol. 15, p. -, 2016.

This study used Bayesian inference to investigate the genotype x environment interaction in common bean grown in Mato Grosso do Sul State, and it also evaluated the efficiency of using informative and minimally informative a priori distributions. Six trials were conducted in randomized blocks, and the grain yield of 13 common bean genotypes was assessed.
