Optimization of selective breeding through analysis of morphological traits in Chinese sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus)

Determining correlations between certain traits of economic importance constitutes an essential component of selective activities. In this study, our aim was to provide effective indicators for breeding programs of Lateolabrax maculatus, an important aquaculture species in China. We analyzed correlations between 20 morphometric traits and body weight, using correlation and path analyses. The results indicated that the correlations among all 21 traits were highly significant, with the highest correlation coefficient identified between total length and body weight.

Diallel cross analysis of plesiomorphic traits in Triticum aestivum L. genotypes

We conducted a 5 x 5 complete diallel cross experiment in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) with the genotypes 6309, Chkwal-50, Dhrabi, Bhkhar-02, and FS-08. Our objective was to evaluate the type of gene action and the general and specific combining abilities required for various morphological traits in wheat. The results of analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among genotypes for all the investigated traits. The results of joint regression analysis showed that the data for all the investigated traits fitted a simple additive dominance model.

Genetic diversity within Vicia faba L. is key to the ge­netic improvement of this important species. In this study, morphologi­cal traits and RAPD molecular markers were used to assess the levels of polymorphism across 12 Tunisian populations, three major and nine minor from different locations. Analysis of morphological traits indi­cated that the three major populations showed significant differences and the nine minor populations exhibited considerable variation for most traits. The grain yield of the Alia population could be increased by inoculation.
