In this study, we profiled gene expression in chicken liver and screened differentially expressed genes in the Bai’er layers and fat line broilers. Birds were derived from the 14th generation of Northeast Agricultural University fat broiler lines and Bai’er layers. Chicken genome arrays were used to screen differentially expressed genes in liver tissue from the Bai’er layers and fat line broilers. We screened 671 differentially expressed genes between broilers and layers at the ages of 2 and 4 weeks.

Detection of hepatitis E virus genome in pig livers in Antioquia, Colombia

C. Gutiérrez-Vergara, Quintero, J., Duarte, J. F., Suescún, J. P., and López-Herrera, A., Detection of hepatitis E virus genome in pig livers in Antioquia, Colombia, vol. 14, pp. 2890-2899, 2015.

Hepatitis E is a form of endemic acute hepatitis found in humans in many countries worldwide and is caused by the hepatitis E Virus (HEV). Detection of HEV in pigs indicates that they may be carriers, possibly through zoonosis. The prevalence of HEV in pigs in Colombia is unknown. Studies in the US found that 11% of pig livers sold in grocery stores are contaminated with HEV. It is also known that HEV can be inactivated when cooked, as it is labile to high temperatures. The aim of this study was to determine HEV contamination in pig livers sold in Medellín, Antioquia.

Influence of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion on postoperative spatial cognitive function in mice

Y. Q. Wang, Wu, W. W., Wang, L. K., Chen, K., and Li, Y. H., Influence of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion on postoperative spatial cognitive function in mice, vol. 13, pp. 5767-5777, 2014.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of partial hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) on postoperative cognitive function in mice. One hundred Kunming mice were randomized into control group (N = 20), sham group (N = 20) and I/R group (N = 60), which was equally divided into 3 subgroups according to the ischemia time (20, 30 and 40 min).

Differential expression of lipid metabolism genes in the liver and adipose tissue of mice treated with evodiamine

D. F. Jiang, Zhang, X. G., Yang, H. L., and Sun, C., Differential expression of lipid metabolism genes in the liver and adipose tissue of mice treated with evodiamine, vol. 12, pp. 1501-1510, 2013.

Evodiamine is the main active alkali of Wu Zhuyu, a widely distributed Chinese herb. It plays an important role in the regulation of body fat deposition. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of evodiamine administration on the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism in the liver and adipose tissue. Fasted mice were subcutaneously injected with evodiamine (37°C, 20 mg/kg), and the core body temperature change and expression levels of lipid metabolism-related genes were evaluated at baseline, 0.5, 1, and 2 h.

Novel splice variants of the bovine PCK1 gene

Z. B. Zhang, Zhang, W., Li, R. L., Li, J. B., Zhong, J. F., Zhao, Z. S., and Huang, J. M., Novel splice variants of the bovine PCK1 gene, vol. 12, pp. 4028-4035, 2013.

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1 (PCK1), also named PEPCK-C, is a multiple-function gene that is involved in gluconeogenesis, glyceroneogenesis, reproduction, female fertility, and development of obesity and diabetes. How its many functions are regulated was largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated mRNA expression and possible splice variants of PCK1 by screening cDNA in nine tissues from Holstein bulls and cows.
