In the present study, real time-polymerase chain reaction was applied to analyze the expression of IGF-I and MyoG genes in Hu sheep longissimus dorsi at different growth stages and their association with meat traits. Expression of the IGF-I gene in Hu sheep differed significantly between males and females at the two day-old (0.01 0.05) between males and females at any growth stage in expression of the MyoG gene. MyoG gene expression in male longissimus muscles tended to be higher than that of females at all growth stages, except for the six month-old stage.

Construction and characterization of a cDNA expression library from the endangered Hu sheep

Hu sheep is one of the most important species in China; it is also listed as one of the 78 nationally protected domestic animals by the Chinese government in 2000. The construction of cDNA expression library of Hu sheep is of great significance for protecting individual genomes, generating transgenic sheep, and conducting clinical research using cDNA from Hu sheep. In this study, the total RNA from the ear tissue of Hu sheep was extracted, and a cDNA expression library was constructed using the SMARTTM technique.

Association between DLK1 and IGF-I gene expression and meat quality in sheep

R. Su, Sun, W., Li, D., Wang, Q. Z., Lv, X. Y., Musa, H. H., Chen, L., Zhang, Y. F., and Wu, W. Z., Association between DLK1 and IGF-I gene expression and meat quality in sheep, vol. 13, pp. 10308-10319, 2014.

The aim of the present study was to detect delta-like 1 homolog (DLK1) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) gene expression in the longissimus dorsi of Hu sheep at different growth stages and study the association between these genes and meat quality. The diameter and density of muscle fibers and tenderness of the longissimus dorsi were measured. Growth stage, but not sex, significantly affected DLK1 and IGF-I expression.

DNA polymorphisms of the Hu sheep melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) gene associated with birth weight and 45d-weaning weight

X. M. Song, Jiang, J. F., Zhang, G. Z., Shi, F. X., and Jiang, Y. Q., DNA polymorphisms of the Hu sheep melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) gene associated with birth weight and 45d-weaning weight, vol. 11, pp. 4432-4441, 2012.

The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) has important roles in regulating food intake, energy balance, and body weight in mammals. In pigs and cattle, MC4R mutations have been identified as genetic markers for growth and traits. Compared with abundant research conducted on other livestock species, little is known about mutations of the ovine MC4R gene. We investigated the effect of MC4R polymorphisms on birth weight and on 45-day weaning weight in 144 Hu sheep.

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of the Lrh-1 gene in Chinese Hu sheep

L. H. Wang, Zhang, W., Ji, J. L., Gao, Q. X., Xiao, S. H., and Wang, F., Molecular characterization and expression analysis of the Lrh-1 gene in Chinese Hu sheep, vol. 12, pp. 1490-1500, 2013.

Liver receptor homologue 1 (Lrh-1) is a member of the nuclear receptor belonging to the second subfamily of the nuclear receptor family 5A (NR5A), also named NR5A2, which is important for lipid homeostasis, embryogenesis, and regulation of aromatics. The present study aimed to understand the sequence of ovine Lrh-1 and the expression traits in reproductive organ tissues. Initially, we cloned Lrh-1 from the liver of Hu sheep through degenerate primer of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and rapid amplification of cDNA ends.
