N. V. Costa, Aboujaoude, C., Vieira, G. S., Paiva, V. V., Neto, R. A. Moraes, Gondim, V. S., Alves, L. R., Torres, M. C. L., and Antunes, R. C., Carcass and meat quality traits in Nellore and F1 Nellore-Araguaia crosses, vol. 14, pp. 5379-5389, 2015.

We evaluated and compared carcass traits and meat quality in Nellore cattle and F1 crosses between Nellore and Araguaia, where 17 individuals were from the Nellore group and 19 were ½ Nellore and ½ Araguaia crosses. All animals belonged to the same birth season and were raised in pasture systems under the same nutritional, environmental, and management conditions.

Expression of immune response genes in peripheral blood of cattle infested with Rhipicephalus microplus

R. Domingues, Wohlres-Viana, S., Reis, D. R. L., Teixeira, H. C., Ferreira, A. P., Guimarães, S. E. F., Prata, M. C. A., Furlong, J., Verneque, R. S., and Machado, M. A., Expression of immune response genes in peripheral blood of cattle infested with Rhipicephalus microplus, vol. 13, pp. 4013-4021, 2014.

The bovine tick Rhipicephalus microplus is responsible for severe economic losses in tropical cattle production. Bos indicus breeds are more resistant to tick infestations than are Bos taurus breeds, and the understanding of the physiological mechanisms involved in this difference is important for the development of new methods of parasite control. We evaluated differences in the transcript expression of genes related to the immune response in the peripheral blood of cattle previously characterized as resistant or susceptible to tick infestation.

Association between a single nucleotide polymorphism in the bovine chemerin gene and carcass traits in Qinchuan cattle

W. Q. Tian, Wang, H. C., Song, F. B., Zan, L. S., Wang, H., Wang, H. B., Xin, Y. P., and Ujan, J. A., Association between a single nucleotide polymorphism in the bovine chemerin gene and carcass traits in Qinchuan cattle, vol. 10, pp. 2833-2840, 2011.

Qinchuan is a red or yellow draft and beef breed in China. In order to identify a predictor of carcass traits on the basis of associations between carcass traits and gene polymorphism, variation in the bovine chemerin gene was investigated using PCR-single-strand conformational polymorphism and DNA sequencing. An SNP of A868G located in exon 2 of the Bos taurus chemerin gene was detected in 716 samples of six breeds (Jiaxian red, Luxi, Nan yang, Qinchuan, Simmental and Luxi crossbred steers, and Xia’nan), all in China, and three genotypes (AA, AG and GG) were found.

Bos indicus or Bos taurus mitochondrial DNA - comparison of productive and reproductive breeding values in a Guzerat dairy herd

J. C. C. Paneto, Ferraz, J. B. S., Balieiro, J. C. C., Bittar, J. F. F., Ferreira, M. B. D., Leite, M. B., Merighe, G. K. F., and Meirelles, F. V., Bos indicus or Bos taurus mitochondrial DNA - comparison of productive and reproductive breeding values in a Guzerat dairy herd, vol. 7, pp. 592-602, 2008.

The observation of bovine mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphisms allows the separation of American zebu cattle, according to its maternal lineage ancestry, into two groups: one with Bos indicus mtDNA and other with Bos taurus mtDNA. The aim of the present study was to determine the productive and reproductive differences between these two groups, in a Guzerat dairy herd. The genotyping of a sample of 56 animals allowed the categorization of most of the 3835 animals in the pedigree file.

Brazilian Nelore cattle: a melting pot unfolded by molecular genetics

M. A. C. Dani, Heinneman, M. B., and Dani, S. U., Brazilian Nelore cattle: a melting pot unfolded by molecular genetics, vol. 7, pp. 1127-1137, 2008.

The aim of the present article was to study the population structure and genetic diversity of Nelore cattle and genetic relationships between Nelore and different taurine and zebu breeds raised in Brazil. DNA polymorphism analysis was carried out with 1976 animals of 16 zebu, taurine and synthetic breeds raised in Brazil. A higher genetic differentiation was observed in taurine than in zebu cattle. Gene flow was intense between the different zebu populations.

Growth hormone mRNA expression in the pituitary of Bos indicus and Bos taurus x Bos indicus crossbred young bulls treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin

S. M. Z. Di Mauro, Furlan, L. R., Ferro, M. I. T., Macari, M., and Ferro, J. A., Growth hormone mRNA expression in the pituitary of Bos indicus and Bos taurus x Bos indicus crossbred young bulls treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin, vol. 1, pp. 327-336, 2002.

The effects of breed and of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) treatment on growth hormone gene expression were studied in young bulls. The experiment was completely randomized in a [2 x 2]-factorial arrangement, using two levels of rbST (0 or 250 mg/animal/14 days), and two breed groups (Nelore and Simmental x Nelore crossbred). A cDNA encoding Bos indicus growth hormone was cloned and sequenced for use as a probe in Northern and dot blot analyses.
