Cotton is an important cash crop. Mining for quantitative trait loci related to yield and fiber quality traits using association analysis has many advantages for cotton research. In this study, 170 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and 258 sequence-related amplified polymorphisms (SRAPs) were used to analyze the association of 3 yield component traits and 5 fiber quality traits of 55 Gossypium barbadense accessions in 2009 and 2010. Principal component analysis of SSRs and SRAPs showed 3 and 2 subgroups, respectively.

The traits particularly important for milk production include milk yield, protein percentage, fat percentage, and the somatic cell score. Alpha-lactalbumin (α-LA) is an important whey protein of cow milk, and is also present in the milk of many other mammalian species. In this study, we analyzed the genetic polymorphisms of the α-LA gene and their relationship to milk production traits (milk yield, protein percentage, fat percentage, and somatic cell score) in Chinese Holstein cows.

Osteoporosis is an important and common complex health problem, particularly in postmenopausal women. It is characterized by a reduction in bone mineral density (BMD) and a deterioration of bone microarchitecture with a consequent increase of fracture risk. The osteoprotegerin (OPG) gene is considered to play an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. We analyzed SNPs of the OPG gene and associations between these polymorphisms and BMD in 399 Chinese postmenopausal women.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is potentially an important gene affecting the susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The objective of this study was to evaluate whether genetic polymorphisms of the TLR4 gene are associated with T2DM susceptibility. This potential association was analyzed in 668 T2DM patients and 672 healthy controls by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequencing methods.

Apolipoprotein A5 (APOA5) and C3 (APOC3) genes are involved in the PPAR lipid metabolism pathway and thus associated with elevated triglyceride levels. However, whether APOA5 and APOC3 genetic polymorphisms affect intramuscular fat deposition and other meat quality traits remains unknown in pigs. One hundred and seventy-one Kele pigs were sampled to investigate genetic variants in the APOA5 and APOC3 genes and their association with seven pork quality traits.

The STAM protein plays an important role in the cytokine-related JAK/STAT pathway. We selected the STAM2 gene as a candidate gene that could be linked to growth performance in analysis of a Chinese cattle breed (Wuchuan Black cattle). We examined genetic variants in the promoter region of the STAM2 gene and their associations with eight growth traits in 159 individuals. Seven SNPs, which included six new SNPs for the SNP database, were found. The core promoter region was identified with a bioinformatic software.

Relationship between multidrug resistance 1 polymorphisms and the risk of prostate cancer in Chinese populations

Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies in men. The multidrug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) is an important candidate gene for prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between MDR1 gene polymorphisms and the risk of prostate cancer. MDR1 gene polymorphism and its association with the risk of prostate cancer were investigated in 357 Chinese men. A novel c.1465C>T polymorphism was detected with created restriction site-polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 6 (CDK6) is a key element of D-type cyclin holoenzymes. It is involved in the regulation of the G1-phase of the cell cycle and is considered to be an important candidate gene for selection of body measurement traits through marker-assisted selection. We cloned the promoter sequence of this gene in bovines and found it to share high similarity with that of the human CDK6 promoter.

Polymorphisms associated with egg number at 300 days of age in chickens

We looked for variations that could be associated with chicken egg number at 300 days of age (EN300) in seven genes of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, including gonadotrophin-releasing hormone-I (GnRH-I), GnRH receptor (GnRHR), neuropeptide Y (NPY), dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), VIP receptor-1 (VIPR-1), prolactin (PRL), and the QTL region between 87 and 105 cM of the Z chromosome.

We looked for novel genetic variations within the Six6 gene by PCR-SSCP, DNA sequencing and forced RFLP-PCR and estimated their associations with production traits in 2132 goats of eight indigenous Chinese breeds. A novel single nucleotide polymorphism (NM_001104993.1: g.232T>C) within the goat Six6 gene was identified. The frequencies of allele “C” varied from 0.8621 to 1.000, which were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Genotype and allele frequencies were found to be significantly different in the breeds.
