C. Pan, Gichira, A. W., and Chen, J. M., Genetic variation in wild populations of the tuber crop Amorphophallus konjac (Araceae) in central China as revealed by AFLP markers, vol. 14, pp. 18753-18763, 2015.

Amorphophallus konjac is an economically important crop. In order to provide baseline information for sustainable development and conservation of the wild plant resources of A. konjac, we studied the genetic diversity and population structure of this species using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) molecular markers. We sampled 139 individuals from 10 wild populations of A. konjac in central China. Using five AFLP primer combinations, we scored a total of 270 DNA fragments, most of which were polymorphic (98.2%).

Molecular genetic analysis of heterosis in interspecific hybrids of Argopecten purpuratus x A. irradians irradians

L. P. Hu, Huang, X. T., Sun, Y., Mao, J. X., Wang, S., Wang, C. D., and Bao, Z. M., Molecular genetic analysis of heterosis in interspecific hybrids of Argopecten purpuratus x A. irradians irradians, vol. 14, pp. 10692-10704, 2015.

Argopecten purpuratus and Argopecten irradians irradians hybridization was successfully performed and the hybrid offspring displayed apparent heterosis in growth traits. To better understand the genetic basis of heterosis, the genomic composition and genetic variation of the hybrids were analyzed with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Seven of eight universal SSR primers displayed polymorphism in the hybrids and their parental groups, and hybrids inherited both parental genotypes at each locus.

Identification of molecular markers associated with fruit traits in olive and assessment of olive core collection with AFLP markers and fruit traits

M. Ipek, Seker, M., Ipek, A., and Gul, M. K., Identification of molecular markers associated with fruit traits in olive and assessment of olive core collection with AFLP markers and fruit traits, vol. 14, pp. 2762-2774, 2015.

The purpose of this study was to characterize olive core collection with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers and fruit traits and to determine AFLP markers significantly associated with these fruit characters in olive. A total of 168 polymorphic AFLP markers generated by five primer combinations and nine fruit traits were used to characterize relationships between 18 olive cultivars. Although all olive cultivars were discriminated from each other by either AFLP markers (

Genetic diversity of the Chinese traditional herb Blumea balsamifera (Asteraceae) based on AFLP markers

Y. X. Pang, Wang, W. Q., Zhang, Y. B., Yuan, Y., Yu, J. B., Zhu, M., and Chen, Y. Y., Genetic diversity of the Chinese traditional herb Blumea balsamifera (Asteraceae) based on AFLP markers, vol. 13, pp. 2718-2726, 2014.

Blumea balsamifera is a commercially important medicinal herb in China and other parts of Asia. It is used to produce borneol. This plant grows in the wild, but resources have diminished greatly in recent years. We examined the genetic diversity of this species to help develop conservation strategies; 35 plants from five provinces were analyzed using AFLPs. Eight AFLP primer combinations generated 1367 fragments, giving a mean of 172 fragments per primer combination.

An AFLP-based approach for the identification of sex-linked markers in blunt snout bream, Megalobrama amblycephala (Cyprinidae)

H. O. Rao, Deng, J. C., Wang, W. M., and Gao, Z. - X., An AFLP-based approach for the identification of sex-linked markers in blunt snout bream, Megalobrama amblycephala (Cyprinidae), vol. 11. pp. 1027-1031, 2012.

Sex-specific DNA markers are useful for studying sex-determination mechanisms and establishment of monosex populations. Three widely spaced geographical populations (Liangzi, Poyang and Yuni Lakes in China) of blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) were screened with AFLPs to search for sex-linked markers. Female and male pools (10 individuals in each pool) from each population were screened using 64 different primer combinations. A total of 4789 genomic fragments were produced, with a mean frequency of 75 bands per primer pair.

Association of AFLP and SCAR markers with common leafspot resistance in autotetraploid alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

Y. Wang, Bi, B., Yuan, Q. H., Li, X. L., and Gao, J. M., Association of AFLP and SCAR markers with common leafspot resistance in autotetraploid alfalfa (Medicago sativa), vol. 11, pp. 606-616, 2012.

To identify amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers associated with resistance or susceptibility of alfalfa to common leafspot (CLS) caused by the fungus Pseudopeziza medicaginis (Dermateaceae), bulked segregant analysis was conducted based on an F1(M × M) population of 93 plants and a BC1S population of 91 plants. Three AFLP markers, ACTCAAR206, TAGCACR185, and GGACTAS264, were found to be associated with CLS resistance or susceptibility.

Genetic characterization of fig tree mutants with molecular markers

The fig (Ficus carica L.) is a fruit tree of great world importance and, therefore, the genetic improvement becomes an important field of research for better crops, being necessary to gather information on this species, mainly regarding its genetic variability so that appropriate propagation projects and management are made.

Genetic diversity and molecular characterization of several Heliconia species in Colombia

L. Isaza, Marulanda, M. L., and López, A. M., Genetic diversity and molecular characterization of several Heliconia species in Colombia, vol. 11, pp. 4552-4563, 2012.

Researchers have classified the Heliconia genus as a group of highly variable and diverse plants. Species and cultivars are visually differentiated primarily on the basis of the color and size of inflorescence bracts. At taxonomic level, flower type (parabolic, sigmoid, or erect) and size are taken into account. The vast morphological diversity of heliconias at intra-specific, intra-population, and varietal levels in central-west Colombia prompted the present study.

Genetic diversity among red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) populations in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River based on AFLP markers

B. F. Zhu, Huang, Y., Dai, Y. G., Bi, C. W., and Hu, C. Y., Genetic diversity among red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) populations in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River based on AFLP markers, vol. 12, pp. 791-800, 2013.

The red swamp crayfish has become one of the most important freshwater aquaculture species in China. At present, although it is widely distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangze River basin, little is known about its population genetics and geographic distribution in China. We estimated the genetic diversity among 6 crayfish populations from 4 lakes (Hongze Lake, Poyang Lake, Dongting Lake, and Yue Lake) using AFLPs. A total of 129 loci were generated with 5 EcoRI-MseI primer combinations and scored as binary data in 139 individuals.

Analysis of mitochondrial DNA using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers of isonuclear allocytoplasmic male sterile wheat accessions and their maintainer lines

M. Ejaz, Qidi, Z., Gaisheng, Z., Qunzhu, W., and Xinbo, Z., Analysis of mitochondrial DNA using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers of isonuclear allocytoplasmic male sterile wheat accessions and their maintainer lines, vol. 12, pp. 5207-5214, 2013.

To produce a good F1 hybrid variety wheat crop, it is necessary to explore novel cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) lines and their maintainer line. This study aimed to identify cytoplasmic variation in three isonuclear-alloplasmic male sterile lines Aegilops kotschyi (Ae.kots) -90-110, Aegilops ventricosa (Ae.ven) -90-110, and Triticum spelta (T.spelta) -90-110 and their maintainer line, A-90-110, at the molecular level.
